The Giant Buddha of Leshan (aka Dafo) is the tallest stone Buddha statue
in the world, carved in a cliff face by a monk of the eighth century in
Sichuan province. The statue overlooks the confluence of
the Minjiang, Dadu and Qingyi and faces the sacred Mount Emei, from a
height of 71 meters.
The construction of the giant Buddha began in 713 AD. Was the idea of a Chinese monk Haitong, who hoped that the Buddha would calm the turbulent waters that plagued the vessels traveling down the river. His designs not only included the carving in vrlacho ypermagethous the statue and the diversion of waters of the river, which flowed to the point.
It is said that when state funding for the project was threatened, the monk took his own eyes to show his piety and sincerity. The construction work was continued by his disciples and finally completed in 803 AD
The area has been designated a World Heritage by UNESCO in 1996.
